Background

In 2008, the University of Guelph will host a special series of performances, films, music, tours, exhibitions and a major conference to celebrate the life and influence of Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose classic Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908. This centennial will offer a unique opportunity to showcase the University's extensive Montgomery collection of memorabilia — including her private journals, scrapbooks, handiwork, photographs, and other records and explore Montgomery's connections to Guelph and Ontario.

Two key events anchor this celebration. Montgomery scholars, biographers, enthusiasts, and fans from across the globe will be able to examine the collections first-hand through a three month exhibit at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre from October 24th to January 18th 2009. A three-day conference (October 24th to 26th, 2008) will explore her impact on readers, writers, and women in the 20th century, recognize her world-wide legacy, and explore the mystery of her creativity.

For those who are unable to visit Guelph during this time, we will officially launch, at the conference, the L.M. Montgomery Research Centre Web site which will provide free online access to the University's wonderful collection, a virtual tour of "Inside and Out: the Lives of Lucy Maud Montgomery" Macdonald Stewart Art Centre exhibit, and copies of many of the papers presented at the conference.

It is anticipated that this event will garner significant publicity across Canada and around the world. We already know that a new major TV series, several new books, and a new musical about Anne are scheduled to celebrate the centennial. Already countless magazine and newspaper articles across the globe have been published in recognition of Montgomery's works which continue to be popular worldwide.

All sponsorship fees are payable upon receipt of an invoice from the University of Guelph and must be paid in full by August 15th, 2008. If preferred, a charitable receipt from the University of Guelph may be issued upon receipt of sponsorship payment.
