A Woman of Her Time

LMM's love of cats is well known — here's Lucky.

Typical of a woman of her times, she produced needlework: doilies, pillow covers and dresser scarves. These, along with her cookbook of snipped recipes and handwritten family favourites, show the many domestic demands made upon a woman who juggled the duties of being a wife, mother and caregiver.

Montgomery (and many of the heroines whom she depicted) had an almost consuming desire to create an ideal home for her family and herself. Based on artifacts and ephemera, the curators have pieced together a portrayal of her perfect home: a place to care for her minister (and mentally ill) husband and two sons, her extensive library of books, a place to write, and, of course, her cats — after all, "a home is not a home without a cat".
